Dec 10 - Instrument concert @ 10am Dec 21 - Fifth grade chorus concert @ 9:15 Dec 23 - 1:50 Dismissal Jan 4 - School resumes Letter from Mrs. Harvey in regards to recent current events Dear Claypit Hill Parents and Guardians, Over the past few weeks, a number of children have expressed anxiety and fear stemming from the recent events in Paris and California. Additionally, a few parents have brought to our attention that children are talking about these events with each other. As I listened to the news last week, I cringed as I thought about how it would sound and feel to a young child. Although it is impossible to completely shield children and I do not advocate for that, it is critically important that parents limit children’s exposure to the news and take time to process it with them as they do hear or read it. Some simple messages that Dr. Hehir, Mrs. McManus, and I say to children are: o “We take measures every day to ensure that Claypit Hill is a safe place for everyone. Our doors are locked all day. Adults in the building are noticing people in the building and asking for identification when we don’t know them. “ o “Your neighborhood is a very safe place in which to live. That was probably part of the reason why your parents chose to live there. The local police are working hard to ensure that it remains a safe place.” o “Professionals in the state and across the country are working tirelessly every day to keep us all safe.” o “We choose to trust that we are as safe as possible so that we can enjoy each day.” o “In spite of all the bad news, the world is full of good people who care about you and are here to help you.” Parents, it saddens me that I need to address this with you. The situation in our country has certainly changed since we were in elementary school. If you feel that you or your child needs assistance, please let us know. Thank you for the privilege of working with your children. I wish each of you could have heard all 523 beautiful voices singing “Give Light” at All School Meeting yesterday. It was truly heart-warming and uplifting. Very warm regards, Christie Below is a letter from Karyn Saxon regarding the reading program Lexia
Dear Parents, As many of you know, we have been taking advantage of the opportunity for students to practice Lexia Reading at home. This year we upgraded to their Lexia Core5 program, which offers a new interface, updated skills and activities. Lexia Core5 is now available as a direct link on the internet. To access it, please go to your school’s home page. Under “for students” you will find a link to Lexia. Clicking on that link will bring to you the Lexia website. From there, students can type in their username and password, which is the same as their lunch ID. If you would like to install it as an app on an iPad or iPad mini, go the app store and download “Lexia Reading Core5”. When you open the app, it will ask for your teacher’s email. Your student will then be able to sign in with their username and password. Please remember: “Lexia at Home” is not required homework. It should also not be done more than 3 times a week and not for more than 20 minutes at a time. If it is used too often, it will no longer serve its purpose. Here are some updates about what is happening in 4th grade this week and in upcoming weeks. Multiplication - All fourth grade classrooms are involved in our second math unit which is multiplication. The multiplication we are going to be doing with the fourth graders this year is going to look different from the standard algorithm that we might all be familiar with. One of the methods we will be teaching is area model. Here is a brief video to watch that will introduce you to this method that the students will be learning. Another method that students will see is the partial products method. Here is a video that will briefly show you how this method looks. We will help students make the connection between both partial products and area model. The other method we will look at with students is the standard algorithm. Just as a refresher here what that method look like. If you have any questions please be sure to contact your child's teacher. Upcoming dates/information *Just Like Me - This week students will be learning about Intellectual Limitations *Hearing and Vision screening will take place this week. *Claypit Cares is November 9th at 9am in the Gym *Picture Retake day is November 10th *No School on November 11th Thank you to all the volunteers who came into 4th Grade on Oct 31st to help run the Pumpkinology investigations.
